Preservation of Water | Methods to minimize water waste | UPSC KPSC SSC PSI

Water is a common heritage, the value of which must be recognized by all. Everyone has the duty to use water carefully and economically. Globally around 40% of the population are facing scarcity and 70% of the Natural deaths are caused by water-related disasters. 

Most part of the world has facing unpredictable pressure on preserving water resources, The world population growing rapidly while the scarcity of resource is also growing. WHO estimated that 40% of the population will face the shortfall of water resources by 2030. In order to produce the food for the growing population will consume 15% increase in water resources.

Some methods to reduce water usage:

  1. Implementation of integrated water resources management, educating the farmers towards preserving and adopting scientific farming methods to reduce water waste. also encouraging urban living people to reserve rainwater.
  2. As Agricultural produce requires more production to feed the growing population, water resource requirement also increases. govt has to initiate to reduce drought lands.
  3. Need to assess and forecast climate change and adopt the necessary precautions to avoid the scarcity of water.
  4. Encouraging the re-use and recycling the water, adopting water re-use methods effectively will help in minimizing water usage.
  5. Govt organizations and NGOs should engage and promote the best practices of water resource preservation, especially to the farmers and industrial users.
  6. Training and capacity building to the farmers, students and other activists in promoting and adopting the practices.
Some of the Methods adopted by India:

1. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has been adopted by several farmers especially in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

2. zero-tillage, raised-bed by planting, precision farming, and drip or sprinkler irrigation

3.  Participatory Governance community ponds and recharge wells

4. Adopting the rainwater harvesting program at most of the govt buildings and institutions.

4. Lessons can also be drawn from the work of Sankalpa Rural Development Society (SRDS) which has been training farmers of Karnataka on the revival of defunct borewells.

5. Govt of India & Govt of Karnataka has initiated a program to provide drinking fresh water to each household by 2023.
